2026 seed garlic is now shipping. What to do when your order arrives, how to store it, and vernalization instructions for warm-winter growers.
Seed garlic from our 2026 harvest is now shipping for fall planting. Orders are going out from our farm in Coburg, Oregon.
What to Do When Your Order Arrives
Remove the garlic from the box as soon as it arrives. Do not leave it sealed in the shipping box. Store it in a dry, open-air location with good airflow — a mesh bag, open bowl, or a spot on a shelf away from moisture. Garlic needs to breathe.
If You Are in a Warm Winter Region
If your winters are mild — USDA zones 8 and warmer — refrigerate your seed garlic for 6 to 8 weeks before planting. Keep it at 35 to 40 degrees F. This cold storage period (vernalization) mimics the chill hours that garlic needs to trigger proper bulb formation. Without it, garlic in warm climates tends to produce a single undivided round instead of a segmented head of cloves.
Use a paper or mesh bag in the refrigerator — not a sealed plastic bag, which traps moisture and can cause mold. Keep it away from ethylene-producing fruit like apples and bananas, which can trigger premature sprouting.
Start your refrigeration period 6 to 8 weeks before your planned planting date. In most warm-winter areas that means starting in September or October for a November planting.
When to Plant
In most of the United States, garlic goes in the ground between mid-October and mid-November — after the first fall frosts but before the ground freezes.
